Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Monday announced that he would hold a “grand” show of power at the Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on Sunday. Ah, news reported.
“PTI will hold a massive jalsa at Minar-e-Pakistan at 2 pm on Sunday,” he said while addressing an election rally at Data Darbar.
Imran said he is fighting this war for the nation and “our next generations” and the entire nation must come together in this fight.
“My life is in danger every time I leave Zaman Park. But I fear not for my life, but for my country, which is on the verge of destruction under the rule of these “imposters”.
Imran said the ruling coalition was ready to go to “any measure” to oust him from electoral politics. “They know they can’t win this election against me, so they want me either disqualified or jailed before the election,” he said.
At the start of his address, Imran condemned the “cold-blooded murder” of PTI activist Ali Bilal alias Zile Shah and vowed to bring “those behind this heinous crime” to justice.
Earlier, Imran led a PTI rally from Zaman Park to Data Darbar after getting permission from the caretaker provincial government. The rally was earlier scheduled for Sunday but had to be postponed after the transitional government imposed Article 144 at the eleventh hour.
The administration allowed the rally on Monday, but said it would carry “a high security risk due to general and specific threats against political rallies and the previous example of an attack on the ex-prime minister.”
Earlier, Imran claimed that Section 144 was imposed illegally in the city only because of “PTI’s election campaign as all other public activities are going on in Lahore”.
He questioned the veracity of the caretaker government’s move, saying “the election schedule has been announced, so how can Article 144 be imposed on political activity?”
Last week, PTI Chairman Imran Khan announced that he would lead a public rally in the Punjab capital to launch the party’s election campaign.
The PTI chief said that “powerful” segments want to cancel the upcoming general elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at any cost.
“They would try to cancel the polls by assassinating a prominent person or by creating a serious law and order situation in the country; I know they will do something to stop the elections,” he added.
Earlier, the caretaker government of Punjab had imposed Section 144 in Lahore and on two occasions banned the PTI rally due to some other planned events in the city.
“We have restricted rallies and political activities for today as we have a PSL cricket match, team movements and a marathon in Lahore which were planned and announced well in advance,” Punjab caretaker chief minister Mohsin Naqvi said in a tweet.
