Indian documentary on climate change Everything that breathes failed to score a win in the Best Documentary category at the 95th Academy Awards, losing to Daniel Roher Navalny. Navalny is a documentary film revolving around Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the events surrounding his poisoning.
Everything that breathes is a Delhi-based documentary that follows two siblings, Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, who have dedicated their lives to rescuing and treating injured birds, especially black kites.
However, to India The Elephant Whisperers won the award in the best documentary short film category. Directed by Karthiki Gonsalves, the 41-minute short follows a family from the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu who end up adopting two orphaned elephants.
Director Gonzalves dedicated the award to “my motherland, India”. Gunit, in a post on Instagram, wrote, “Tonight is historic as this is the first Oscar for an Indian production…”
