Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai is being praised for her graceful response to a strange request from American TV host Jimmy Kimmel during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony.
Yousafzai, a Pakistani girl’s education activist who miraculously survived a bullet to the head from the Taliban in October 2012, attended the glittering ceremony as executive producer of Stranger at the Gate, which was nominated for the documentary short honor.
During the ceremony, Kimmel approached Yousafzai and read a question from a fan named “Joan.” The question was about the incident involving singer Harry Styles and Hollywood star Chris Pine, which apparently took place at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
“Your work for human rights and education for women and children is an inspiration. As the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine? he asked me.
“I’m only talking about peace,” replied a visibly uncomfortable Yousafzai.
To this, Kimmel said, “You know what? That is why you are Malala and no one else is. That’s a great answer, Malala. The winner is Malala-land, everyone.”
Yousafzai later shared a news clip of the incident on her Twitter account.
“Treat people with kindness,” she simply captioned the video.
Many on social media criticized Kimmel.
“Why the hell did Jimmy Kimmel go to Malala, make him joke about that sparkly a** Chris Pine and Harry, and then call Malala country?? what’s wrong with this man #oskar (sic),” wrote one Twitter user.
Another wrote: “Oscar was boring.
“Asian people still lost tonight because of Jimmy Kimmel’s terrible banter with Malala,” read another tweet.
At the ceremony, Yousafzai opted for a sparkling silver sequined Ralph Lauren floor-length gown with a built-in scarf. She also wore an emerald flower ring from Santi Jewels.
Kimmel was also criticized by Indian fans when he referred to the artists performing on the Oscar-nominated Telugu song “Naatu Naatu” as “Bollywood dancers”.
