MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – March 14, 2023) A prominent international rights organization on Tuesday called for strict regulation of the production and trade of police equipment amid increasing misuse of rubber bullets and other weapons against protesters around the world.
Amnesty International conducted a global survey of police abuse of rubber bullets and other less lethal weapons against peaceful protesters. The survey was conducted in 30 countries over the last five years.
“Security forces around the world routinely misuse rubber and plastic bullets and other law enforcement weapons to violently suppress peaceful protests and cause horrific injuries and deaths,” it said in its new report on the trade and use of police equipment.
The document, called My Eye Explodes, revealed instances of “reckless and disproportionate” use of less-lethal police weapons against protesters.
“We believe that legally binding global controls on the production and trade of less lethal weapons, including KIPs (kinetic impact missiles), are urgently needed, along with effective guidelines on the use of force to combat the escalating cycle of abuses,” Patrick Wilken. , said a military, security and police affairs researcher at the watchdog.
The report was released in conjunction with the Omega Research Foundation, which is part of other organizations calling for a United Nations-backed Torture Free Trade Agreement that would ban the production and trade of inherently offensive IEDs and other police weapons. The agreement will also introduce trade controls on the supply of law enforcement equipment, such as rubber and plastic bullets, in line with human rights requirements.
